My little Google homepage thing has a quote box that gives me three new quotes every day. Today they were all good.
Science is facts; just as houses are made of stones, so is science made of facts; but a pile of stones is not a house and a collection of facts is not necessarily science.
—Henri Poincare
Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.
—Will Rogers
I don’t deserve this award, but I have arthritis and I don’t deserve that either.

Okay, I so I kind of fell off the YouTube wagon tonight. Sorry, everyone. Actually, I’m trying to introduce my mother-in-law, Sue, to some of the music I listen to, particularly the Barenaked Ladies, They Might Be Giants, and some other odds and ends. So there are a few repeats from that unfortunate YouTube binge I did a few months ago, but I want to compile a nice little video list here for her. So please ignore if you aren’t into my brand of music. But take note, all you pretty people — the tubby geeks are infiltrating the pop music scene!
First off, a couple versions of One Week …
- One Week (live acoustic bluegrass version)
- One Week (video version, for reference — they always wanted a video with a car chase)
Some other BNL stuff …
- Another Postcard (the chimpanzee song I mentioned)
- Brian Wilson (from their first album, about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys)
- Enid (from their first album)
- Jane (from the second album)
From the Bathroom Sessions …
And a couple from They Might Be Giants (none of which, as near as I can tell, are actually created by They Might Be Giants — it’s all fan stuff) …
I’ll find more and make you a CD, Sue. But for now, that might be a bit of fun viewing …
ADDED LATER …
Some Indigo Girls:
- Galileo (the video is a little out of sync with the audio, but it’s a fun video and a great song)
- Hammer and a Nail (a bit dated, but another great song)
- Least Complicated (a very good song, and tonight I noticed that the video has guitar chords at the bottom with capo differences included — hee hee!)
- Perfect World (a good song, not my favorite, but a very nice snapshot of what it’s like to see the Indigo Girls live without the big band behind them)
I’ve just recently started watching Family Guy, an animated sitcom that takes The Simpsons to the next level of offensiveness. It hits some and misses some, but it’s very funny and very smart for the most part. I found an uncensored thing on YouTube tonight that is very entertaining to watch.
It’s going to offend some people, so please don’t watch it if you prefer to avoid religious humor, a bit of foul language, and cheap potty jokes. But if you enjoy that type of stuff, it’s worth a look.
William Rivers Pitt, a columnist for Truthout, posted this great piece about the late Paul Wellstone, senator from Minnesota, who died in a plane crash five years ago. I won’t repeat anything from it — Pitt’s words are more than eloquent enough. Whether you are liberal or conservative, Wellstone’s commitment to representing his constituents and their views was always impressive.
Richard Feynman had this funny and alarming observation of the economy:
There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it’s only a hundred billion. It’s less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers.
